Gold Mining in Montana (video)

Rob and Les sent this video over this afternoon. Short and to the point, this 1938 wash plant is a monster work horse - it is pounding that paydirt.  ~ Steu

Sluice box: an element of your gold recovery system

Sluice box: an element of your gold recovery system
Sluice box: an element of your gold recovery system
My buddy Pete and I are building some 8 ft wide sluices for one of my projects a couple of years ago.  Panels like these are quick and economical to build.

Sluices have been the mainstay of most mining operations worldwide.
I strongly recommend using them wherever possible using P.E. Randy Clarkstons recommendations that he conducted in the Klondike placers in the late 1980's

While sophisticated systems can and do increase recovery rates on some projects you need to keep close track of diminishing returns on your project.

Sluice box: an element of your gold recovery systemI have found that the down time, and maintenance  especially in primitive areas need to be addressed constantly or your overall recovery can be compromised.

Gold Mining Chile

Gold Mining In Chile, The Stories Sites Will Tell

Here are some photos sent to Rob and Les from a fella doing some exploration in Chile.

Really the first step is doing some basic geology work which this guy is all over. He is very smart and knows what he needs to find that will indicate gold is near by.

Here is a photo to the entrance of an old mine tunnel on the property.

Would you go in there to extract your dreams.

Not for me.

Doing what works ..... a home made sluice box they were using before he arrived.  It is true in every trade, the better your tools the more enhanced your results will be. This is a great example.

He was told there were extracting 10-15 grams per cubic meter with this.

Gold mining on the Bering Sea

Gold mining on the Bering Sea
Bering Sea Gold Mining

This picture even looks cold. Rob  and Les were up doing some consulting on the Bering Sea last month. Now that the ice has melted the gold miners are busy like bees up there.  Good thing Rob and Les don't get sea sick.

Too cold for my taste.

Gold Washplant: before and after

Gold Washplant: before and after
No doubt about it, this is the largest plant Rob and Les have ever worked with. This is a shot from taking it back to shop after picking it up.

There is a six inch clearance on that sign.

It weighed in at just about 20 tons.

Notice the total length and that color. Almost everyday Rob would complain about the color of this one - he couldn't wait to get it painted.

Now the finished portrait.

Gold mining adventures in Montana

Gold mining adventures in Montana
The last few days have been filled with 70 MPH winds and smoke. Apparently there is a forest fire nearby that is (hopefully) not headed this way. Have been really enjoying the solitude of mining ... lots of deer, elk, and birds out here. Our site here is one of the most remote we have done in USA, very long drive to anywhere close.

The lease that is worked out is fair to everyone and they are excited to be learning about gold mining.

Gold in da pan

Gold in da pan
Gold in pan

Mining is not an accident.  It can be something you are lucky at for a while.  Successful mining is an acquired skill.

Working with Les and Rob I learn more about mining every day. But, like I said yesterday, they make mining look easy. Just like watching pro sports, they make what they do look easy too. What you don't see is the hard work, study, and tenacity they apply in the moment - in the experience of getting 'er done.

The kicker for me is Rob and Les and a load of fun mining. If it ain't fun they just wont do it.

I am really enjoying what I am learning from these two.

Getting the gold, the art of making adjustments

Gold mining, the art of adjustments
Gold mining, the art of adjustments

Was talking to Rob last night before he sent some new photos.

I was reminded that there is no recipe on successful gold mining. One critical skill is the ability to adjust as you proceed. And there are all kinds of adjustments.

You have to adjust the equipment: plant, excavator, water flow, water restoration, and so much more. Plus you are always having to maintain your own stamina to work the long hours.

They has some issues with the CAT and had to call 'em to come out and take a look at it ... way over my heard on comprehending.

Lots of variables in mining - not just to monitor - but to adjust with intuitive guidance and technical skills to set the optimum extraction opportuntity.

Gold wash plant - pumping out the gold since 1938

Gold wash plant - pumping out the gold since 1938
Gold wash plant - pumping out the gold since 1938

This plant was revitalized, rebuilt from the frame.

Rob and Les found it abandoned and took it on as their latest wash plant project.

I wonder how much gold this beauty has extracted over its' decades of working?

Today, the only left of its' 1938 heritage is te frame.

The fact that Rob and Les are extracting gold with this one is a testimony to its' durability.

Rob and Les are on the gold again

Rob and Les are on the gold again
Rob and Les are on the gold again

From my perspective, these two make gold  mining look easy.

As I watch them work with the clients and explain the technologies and strategies of gold mining, I realize, more and more, how much knowledge they have cultivated over their 30 years of mining - it is really just ingrained in them - in their work habits.

This photo taken, in the first couple of days of their mine being fully operational, tells the story of their mining skills.

Rob, rock in the box

I am lucky to be working with Rob and Les. Besides being honest and cheerful guys, they are also two of the most crafted and skilled people I have ever met.  What I have learned working with them is that gold mining is not for the weak, the worriers, or the non-committed. Rob and Les are demonstrating, once again, their amazing talents in the photos coming over today.

Rob and Les are mining their claim and without computer access, so Rob sent me some photos that I will be posting here to give updates on their gold mining progress.

The wash plant is working as they expected. Right now they are mining some mounds, under which they expect to find some serious rock in the box.

Our big washplant is on site and ready to go.

gold wash plant
Les and I just moved our wash plant 150 miles and had it assembled and on site in six hours.

We are getting our water pump tomorrow and gen set the next day.

We don't have internet service on site yet so blogs will be a bit short. We hope to have rock in the box in two days and get our season underway.

We are setting up camp and getting logistics put together. It is coming together nicely.

Another gold wash plant mining the mode lode in Wyoming

gold wash plant for sale
Rob delivered this plant to the folks in Wyoming and helped them get their mining system setup. Everything went smooth, the plant fired up the first time and some rocks/gravels that we thought might be a concern turned out to be a non issue. Before Rob left they had successfully extracted some gold and were on their way to more!

Now this is a stout little gold wash plant

gold wash plant for sale
Gold wash plant

We just finished up another wash plant. I really like this one. I was able to find a good subframe and we did a complete retrofit.

Stout frame and its made with american steel! I love it. My brother Les is such a good craftsman and can do guy.

This is a design that can even be used as a small floating type of wash plant similar to the New Zealand type of wash plant.

I made some really good friends when I was on a mining project in the 80's when Les and I

gold wash plantworked on a mining project there.

Some good mining men and an amazing helicopter pilot took me all over the south island of New Zealand and shared their techniques with me. It was there I learned how the hydraulic riffles functioned  under full operating mining conditions.
I later built and implemented these technics on my own projects.

I built this style of plant and have liked it ever since. Its a good one.

My brother Les and I are proud of our completely restored 1938 pitcher style gold wash plant, its rock ready!!!

My brother Les finished our old 1938 pitcher style wash plant today. He has worked so hard to finish the complete restoration of an old historical wash plant that worked many years in the Helena mining district of Montana then was timed out on Alder gulch near Virginia city Montana.

The old girl was pretty tired. We have spent the last two and a half months completely rebuilding her with huge sluices and all new components and I can't wait to get it on our property.

We are tackling  a low grade high volume property that has gold in the 60 mesh size. The gold recovery appears to be readily caught in simple sluices.

We are scheduling trucks to get our gear on site and hope to have a cleanup in  10 days.  We will have a camp and limited cell service but I hope to set up a repeater and do some videos of our progress.

One of our signature style gold wash plants going to the high desert of Wyoming

We  finished up a real nice washplant for a client in Wyoming.

We had a lot of fun building this wash plant. Every wash plant is a bit different as you add a few new little improvements and it starts to shape up.

When we fired it up it just ran so smooth. My bet is that this plant will get the gold for many years to come

It is a double deck with a full apron underneath and a boil box reporting to a simple sluice box.

I hope to have it on site Wednesday and our first cleanup on Thursday night.

My good friend Jack is doing well on his Montana project. He is ahead of me so far but I hope to catch up with him soon.

Our new big washplant is ready to go and we hope to have it hauled this next week to our new mining site.
I can't wait to get it  set up and get making some gold.

This project is just myself and my brother Les and we hope to have a web cam, we will try to get organized for an online program a few hours a week. I will be getting that organized soon I believe.
